“I grew up at the bottom of Africa in a small town with a big name.” That’s how my memoir, Two Bricks and a Tickey High, begins. I grew up in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, a small town nestled in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains. Though it’s now a bustling city, it remains home in my heart, even after 40 years away.

In 1979, after a stint in the army, I sailed across the South Atlantic from Cape Town to Uruguay, chasing a dream of circumnavigating the world. I completed my first Whitbread Round the World Race in 1981, racing again in 1985 and again 1989. After 250,000 offshore miles, I needed a new challenge and entered the Around Alone, a single-handed race around the world. That dream ended on a reef off Bermuda, but it launched my writing career.

I self-published my first book Spindrift and discovered that writing gave me the same freedom as the open ocean. Fifteen books and hundreds of articles and blogs later, I’m still finding my stride.

It's hard to ask, but sometimes you have to

Writing 15 books took some effort - and a little money. The way forward is through old fashioned bookstores and audio books, but we drained the swamp, that swamp being my bank account. If you like what you have read please help me get these books to the next level by chipping into my GoFundMe. You can, of course, just buy a book or buy me a cup of coffee.

Thank you.

Wow! I had no idea where Brian was going to take me with his book Cinnamon Girl. It twisted and turned so many times I got dizzy. Loved it and highly recommend.
